Remember the days when the medical world depended on the use of beepers? When a doctor was needed, their pager or beeper was activated. The flashing light indicated that it was time to call the hospital, or office where they worked. They would then learn the details of the case, and decide how to approach. They could inform the caller as to the personnel that was needed, and mobilize the troops to the operating room or office. Today the use of a PDA and medical software has eliminated the use of beepers and pagers. In only a small number of cases are those used. Today it seems as though everyone has switched to a PDA and medical software for their needs. In actuality, it seems as though a PDA, especially one stocked with medical software is a far better option for medical professionals. They can still receive information regarding emergency situations, and problems that may arise with their patients, but they can also use the system for a whole lot more. One type of PDA medical software that is frequently being used is a medical dictionary, or physician’s desk reference on prescription medications. These programs can be downloaded directly onto their PDA, and used when needed. This may help during an emergency situation if the doctor is unfamiliar with a patient. They may have a new patient arrive in their office or emergency room who is on several cancer drugs, and another medication for their chronic pain. The doctor can quickly diagnose the problem, and see what drugs can be prescribed without the patient feeling any adverse side effects. PDA medical software can also be used to organize certain facets of their office including scheduling, billing, and medical records. Using PDA medical software to organize medical records can be a great help, though some doctors may not like transferring their files onto the system. This type of PDA medical software is especially important when one of their patients lands in the emergency room. The general doctor is often called, but if they have a large number of patients, they may have difficulties remembering the specific prescriptions that patient is taking, and other issues relating to their general health. By using the PDA medical software they can search for that specific patient, and pass along information pertaining to their health. PDA medical software is important in terms of organizational issues. When a situation arises such as the computers in the office dying, the doctors can still have their records right at their fingertips. The use of PDA medical software ensures that the office can keep running, and stay functional no matter what may happen. It also helps the doctor stay organized, and have easy access to their patient files.
